How the footage and Laws apply

What to look at in this scene is the referee's positioning and movement at the moment the cross was delivered. First, as the cross came in from the left, the referee moved around the play in an arc. This gave the referee a position from which they could take in both any handball offence from the cross and the situation inside the penalty area, and that is instructive. Next, look at the referee's footwork before the cross was delivered. I referee myself, and I tend to be satisfied once the incident appears to be within my field of vision and to come to a stop. The referee in this scene, however, can be seen taking small steps continuously so as to be ready whenever the cross came in. Keeping the feet moving makes it easier to set off smoothly when the cross is actually delivered. It also has the advantage that the referee can adapt when the attacking player changes their mind, for example by feigning a cross and driving forward down the line instead. This is not about the decision itself but about the quality of the preparation that allows decisions to be made correctly, and it is a valuable example for match officials.
